Building The Skeletons Of Your Closet: The Modest Key Basics

Dear Ladies,

We all had those rough mornings where there is absolutely nothing to wear. I have given plenty of tips on how to get ready quicker in the morning in my last post. (Here) In that post I quickly stated that your closet must also have some key pieces. These key pieces are the basics of the basics and will help you through many troubles. Of course I’m making it modest key pieces, that’s what’s this blog is all about after all. Without further ado here are the 15 key modest basics you need in your closet.

Abaya Dress (in black, white, beige) – Every single hijabi already owns this piece, but just had to put it here for the newbies. The abaya dress is a loose long sleeve ankle length dress. See the photos for reference. Get them in classic cuts with minimal to no embellishments. It should be plain.

Open Abaya (in navy, beige, black) – These are perfect for absolutely everything, especially if you are wearing pants. Again keep the cut simple and the embellishments as well. Maybe a little bit of lace on the sleeve and hem or a beaded cuff, is just what you need.

Wide Leg Pants (in dark navy, beige, white) – Yes ladies we are allowed to wear pants, that are not too fitted/tight or resemble men’s pants. The wide legged pants are perfect, they are simple feminine and they are airy. You can go really wide or subtly wide. In this case go subtly wide, you don’t want to make a statement.

Cashmere Sweater (in beige, black,) – Cashmere is a very luxurious fiber, every lady needs a cashmere piece. It will keep you warm in the winter months and it’s a timeless classic. Get them in neutrals.

Button up Shirt (in white, blue&white striped) – This piece has been worn since the 60’s, your grandmother might even own one. Whatever the occasion a white button up is always in style.

Long A- line Skirt (in beige, black, minimal print) – Some days we don’t want to wear an abaya so skirts are our next best bet. The skirt should be ankle length or longer. Get them in neutrals like black and beige, have a patterned one too in a small print like leopard or florals.

Trench Coat (in khaki) – Once you buy your first trench, that will be the only outerwear you will wear. The silhouette is simple enough to be dressed up and down. Get thicker ones for winter and lighters ones for spring. Again the color should be a khaki, any other color would look odd. Keep it plain with little to no embellishments.

Chiffon Hijab (in black, beige, grey, white, navy) – This is a mandatory piece, chiffon is light and it is the best fabric in my opinion. Keep the colors simple and no embellishments what so ever. Remember these are the basics, they should be very flexible and plain. Get a textured under cap so the hijab won’t slip off too much. You can also go for jersey hijabs but chiffon looks more put together.

Ballet Flats (in camel, black) – They are great for a tremendous amount of walking and rocky terrain. Keep them simple with no embellishments, try an almond toe, a round toe will look frumpy.

Espadrille Wedges (in white, black) – The classic summer shoe that comes in so many variations. For inspiration look for the Castańer espadrille wedges with the ribbon ties. Those are perfect for hot weather.

Knee High Boots (grey camel, black) – These are perfect for those dresses that are a tad bit too short. Yes leggings will be easier but the look of the boots look best for fall. They are best in a block heel but a stiletto heel works. *Key tip in Islam your heels cannot make noise, they will attract attention from the opposite gender.

Pumps (in black, nude, red) – Yes that red pump is a staple because it can up your outfit instantly, again make sure they don’t make noise when you walk. Go for a pointed toe, it’s more classier. The heel should be 3 inches and lower never higher than that. Find a red that works for you, all of these staples should be in colors that look best on you.

Diamonds (real or fake) – A diamond tennis bracelet can do wonders to any outfit. A diamond necklace is a must have, get a diamond pendant necklace, it will be easier to wear over your hijab.

Simple Watch (in white, grey) – The watch should look masculine enough so it doesn’t look girly. Cartier women’s watches are great inspiration. As for the watch face it should be white all the way, the strap should be a neutral color as well.

Classic bag (tote, crossbody bag, clutch) – Bags can be a struggle sometimes, these 3 silhouettes never bore out. They are practical and they are perfect for every and any look. You can go a bit crazy here, but keep them somewhat simple.
